Singles - Final
Kim Clijsters (BEL) d. (2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) 63 75 (1 hour, 37 minutes)
Finals facts
* Clijsters wins her 23rd Sony Ericsson WTA Tour
singles title (fourth Tier I) in her 37th career final; she
becomes the only the second player after Steffi Graf in 1994 and
1996 to win the Indian Wells and Miami titles in the same year (Clijsters
is the first to win both titles as Tier I events, as Indian Wells
was promoted to Tier I status in 1997)
* Clijsters is the lowest-ranked (No.38) and first
unseeded champion in Miami; the previous lowest-ranked Miami
champion was then-No.11 Venus Williams in 1998
* Sharapova was appearing in her 11th career
singles final, aiming for her 10th Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles
title
* Clijsters is projected to rise from No.38 to
No.17 on Monday's Sony Ericsson WTA Singles Rankings (April 4,
2005); Clijsters was ranked No.133 prior to winning the Pacific
Life Open title in Indian Wells two weeks ago
* Had Sharapova won, the 17-year-old Russian would
have risen to No.2 in the world, becoming the sixth-youngest to do
so in computer rankings history
* Clijsters improves to 3-0 lifetime vs. Sharapova,
having beaten the Russian twice in 2003 (Los Angeles and
Luxembourg)
* Clijsters, who beat the world's Top 3 players in
her past two events (No.1 Davenport in Indian Wells final, No.2
Mauresmo in Miami SF and No.3 Sharapova in Miami final) is
the first player to beat the top seeds of both Indian Wells
(Davenport) and Miami (Mauresmo) in the same year
* For the first time since 1998 (V.Williams d.
Kournikova) the championship match featured two women making their
Miami final debuts
* Clijsters becomes only the third woman in history
to win seven matches en route to victory in Miami without dropping
a set (Evert in 1986, Graf in 1987 and 1988)
* The Belgian-Russian final was the first in 10
years not to feature an American woman (Graf d. Date in 1995)
Quotes
Kim Clijsters, 2005 NASDAQ-100 Open women's
singles champion:
"Even
this one is even harder to believe (than Indian Wells). I
don't know what to say about all this. It's
been an incredible four weeks. I'm
just going to try to enjoy it as much as I can."
"I
think what I did really well today was be patient. Because
in these (windy) conditions, it's very hard to play your own
tennis and to play aggressively because with the wind, it's very
hard. And on each side
of the court you sort of have to produce different tactics and you
have to adjust your game a little bit. I
think I did that really well today."
"Even after winning Indian Wells I came here and was really looking forward to coming here because I couldn't play here last year because I was injured. This whole trip has been so much fun. Just being able to be back on the court, but also off court, seeing all the girls again, seeing some guys back on tour. It's been great to see everyone as well."
On her left wrist:
"I
just feel it pulling a little bit. But
my work is done here so now I can just look after this. And
(in the) next couple of days when I go home I'll go to the
hospital, have another MRI just to make sure that everything's
fine before I start practicing on the clay."
Maria
Sharapova, singles runner-up:
"I'm
not really disappointed. I
think I've had a great week. After
having such a terrible match at Indian Wells (losing 60 60 in the
semifinals to Lindsay Davenport), I think I bounced back really
well and I performed well and I fought out there, and I gave it
all I got for this match. Unfortunately,
you can't win every single match, and I hope that people respect
that. So, one day, this is life; you're going to have good
moments, you're going to have bad. That's
the way life is."
On
dropping serve at 5-5 in the second set after leading 40-15:
"I didn't take that chance of holding my serve. That would have put some pressure on her, and she would be serving to stay in the second set. But those are the chances that I still have to learn to take in my future matches. She just managed to play a little bit better in those points, and I was a little bit sloppy and didn't have that extra boost."
On Kim Clijsters's victories in Indian Wells and Miami: "I think the biggest surprise is that it was her 14th match, and I didn't feel like she was physically fatigued. You could see her running after every ball and giving it all she's got out there. She was recovering very well. After 14 matches, I'm at least not at that point where I can do that... From today's performance, she is a Top 5 player at this point."
